You may recognize the brand Mulberry from the latest fashion magazines. Singer Lana del Rey has been sporting their Del Rey bag which was inspired by the singer herself.
The other night, I attended the opening party for Mulberry’s first store in San Francisco. Mulberry is an English luxury brand that got its start in 1971. Mulberry designs are what I describe as “classic English.” You see a lot of quilted fishing bags, poacher bags, riding pants; items that are inspired by life in the English countryside. Though the brand has evolved over the last two decades, the country roots are still strong and can be seen predominately in their handbag and jacket designs. This is what differentiates Mulberry from other brands.
I’m not a huge fan of logos. Mulberry’s signature Daria cut-out logo plaque is too flashy for me. Nonetheless, Mulberry does have some awesome pieces. Here are my favorite things from the party:
Alexa Bag. It reminds of me of Proenza Schouler’s PS1 handbag. The Alexa is more structured and rugged. The dark brown and pinky beige are great colors for the Fall season.
Pointy Toe & Tapered-Heel Pumps. I love pink! Thais my favorite color. These shoes make a statement and put a spin on a classic cut. These pumps would look great with even a black pencil skirt and top.
Blurry Bloom Dress. A fun print. The colors are vibrant and rich. The cut is playful and not overly sexy, which is refreshing from what we commonly see in stores. Add a pair of black zippered ankle boots and a leather jacket and you are ready to go!
Hetty Shoulder Bag. A foldable clutch that can be worn be three different ways; folded over, cross body or as large clutch (not folded over with strap detached). The textured leather bag (to the right) is the one I have my eyes on.
Bayswater Ostrich Purse. This is Mulberry’s classic staple handbag, the Bayswater. Reminiscent of Hermes’ Birkin handbag, the Bayswater is a sturdy bag that can move from the office to the evening. The bag is lightwieght. I found this to be suprising since most bags with this shape are heavy. If a purse is heavy to begin with, imagine how cumbrous it will feel once you place your belongings inside it! Steer clear of wieghty hardware and bulky materials. Sometimes, it is better to get a classic item in a bold color so it stands apart. Hot fuschia is eye-catching.
