By The Devil Wears Marc Jacobs
It all started out on a quiet Thursday night in San Francisco: girlfriends, cocktails, shopping mayhem, other wise known as Sassy City Chicks- a seasonal sample sale. I went as I went several times before, not expecting to find anything spectacular. Except this time I discovered the magic that was Taneesi.
I had my eye on the most stunning silver bib necklace, with amber and periwinkle agate stones. I needed that necklace, the designer Manjari Agochiya, was asking for $30, a very reasonable price for something so extraordinary. Once I heard the story of how the necklace came to be, I was sold. Apparently Manjari designed what the necklace would look like, but had it created by underprivileged women in India who would get the proceeds. Beautiful and for a good cause, I was all over this collection!
So of course, I had to find out more. Tanessi was recently launched in October of 2007, but already has pieces in Bay Area boutiques: Melt, and The Baddest Bag. Designer Manjari has said of her want to design, "since I was a kid I loved creating intricate designs on paper. I was always intrigued with how the connection of a few shapes all pulled together could look so good. I developed my love for creating something out of nothing into a profession a few years ago." And of her inspiration, "I have always been fascinated with a variety of art forms in India and around the world. I wanted to use different art forms and fuse them with my creations to make something unique."
Coming from a family of artists, it is only natural that Manjari now creates amazing pieces, including: bangles, earrings, necklaces, rings, shawls and stoles. But it was not always this way, for professionally she studied to become a software engineer. And we are sure glad her love of art and design triumphed in the end. I literally had my breath taken away when I saw how exquisite her antique chandelier earrings and bangle were in person!
You can find Manjari's amazing work around the Bay in local shows, exhibits, her studio in Dublin by appointment only, boutiques mentioned above, and of course her etsy shop.
